How to Build a Pergola?
A pergola is a unique structure that is erected in the backyard basically to perk up the beauty of the landscape. It neither provides any kind of shelter from the elements of nature like wind, rain and sunlight nor does it create an extra space. It is primarily a decorative structure that adds an element of elegance, style, panache and sophistication to your otherwise bare backyard. It creates a special space where you can entertain your guests and enjoy the mesmerizing sunsets. Here is a stepwise procedure of how to build a pergola.
Firstly, you need to collect all the requisite materials and tools. Large number of wood posts would be required for building pergola. Cedar wood is typically preferred because it is naturally resistant to decay and it is also damaged easily by the different elements of nature. Additionally, nails, screws, steel base anchors, hammer and jigsaw would also be required.
The entire structure stands on four pillars. These pillars either stand on the concrete base or a part of them is embedded in the soil. The former case, steel base anchors are used, while in the latter case, the wooden post is placed at least 12-inches inside the earth. It is very important to ensure that the four pillars are properly anchored; other wise with the passage to time, the pergola may collapse or become skewed.
Once, the posts have bee securely erected, the next step is to install the beam to make the roof of the pergola. For this cut four 2 x 6 cedar wood posts. With the help of the template mark the curved notches at the ends of the beams. Use the jigsaw to cut the notched ends properly. Fix the beams over the four posts, and fasten them with clamps. Further, secure each of the four joints with four 3-inches number 10 screws.
After the beam has been installed, the roof of the pergola has to be built. Cut 2 by 6 posts and fix them on the beam with the help of galvanized nails. Cut five pieces of 2 by 4 posts and install them at the top of 2 by 6 posts with galvanized nails. This will form the top slat
With this pergola is ready for use. If you wish, you can also build a base for your pergola. The base is especially useful, if the pergola is in the center of your lawn. The base can be made up of concrete or wood.
