How to Build a Shed?
A well-built shed not only enhances the looks of your home, but also increases its value by providing an extra space that can be used as a store room, club house or even as house annex. Furthermore, due to the presence of the shed, all the other spaces of your home like the guest room, basement, store room and garage become free of the clutter.
Yet, another premium benefit of the shed is that all your tools, equipments and appliances can be found in one place; you don’t have to waste your time and energy in searching for them. Now that we know the advantages of a shed, its time to build one, here is a step-by-step procedure to build a shed.
- The first thing that you need to do is to select a plan for the shed. The internet is the best place to find different kinds of construction plans. Select anyone of them depending upon your requirements, budget and the available space.
- On the basis of the shed construction plan, start collecting the materials. You would need a lot of lumber. It is advisable to use pressure-treated lumber for floor and lower parts of the walls. This kind of lumber is sturdy as well as pest and decay resistant. Additionally, you would also require large quantities of nails, hinges, screws, and the like.
- The floor of the shed can be built on concrete and gravel or balanced on wooden posts. Often, sheds are built directly on wooden skid; such sheds are movable. For the roof, you would need roof underlay, sheathing and cladding materials.
- For the tools, check the list of the materials and tools that come with the construction plan. Commonly, hammer, screw driver, jigsaw, measuring tape and framing square would be required.
- For the shed, you would require permission of the Building Department. Don’t forget to attach the construction plan with your application. Apart from this, you would also need the approval of the Homeowners Association. Talk to your neighbors too, perhaps, they might have some objection.
- The next important thing that you need to do is to select a good location for the shed. The ideal location is the area between your garden and sightline of your neighbors. To a certain extent, the location also depends upon the size of the shed, which in its turn, varies according to your budget and amount of space you need.
- Once, you have obtained the requisite permission and also selected the location, start building the shed. Begin with the foundation. If it on concrete slab, then build the slab. However, if it on the wooden posts, then make sure that the posts are protected by concrete padding.
- The floor of the shed is built on two pieces of lumber called skids. Over this, joists are placed, which keep the frame of the shed together. Nail the joists to the bands of the frame and then place the plywood; the floor is ready. Prepare the frame of the wall and erect it on the floor; ensure that it is upright.
- For the roof, single beam is used, which rests on the front and rear end of the wall with four supports. The entire roof is covered with sheathing material over which cladding material like asbestos or corrugate iron sheets are placed. Finally, at the edges metal sheets are placed. The doors and windows are attached, and with that your shed is ready for use.
