How to Build a Wooden Boat
How to Build a Wooden Boat?
Are you intending to make a wooden boat? If your answer is yes, then you have reached the right place because here we will tell you exactly how to build a wooden boat without spending too much of time and money. So, let’s get going.
The first thing that you need to take into account is the design of the boat. There are several places where you can get ideas for the design. Some of them are television, movies, magazines, books and internet. You can also make your own design. According to the design of the wooden boat, you would have to select the materials and tools. For a simple wooden boat, you would need different kinds of wood like:
- Four 1’’x10’’ pine boards that are 16’ long
- Two 2’’x 4’’ spruce boards that are 16’ long and 2’ long respectively
- Three 16’long boards, one of 7/8’’x2’’ plank of spruce and the other 7/8’’x10’’ plank of pine
- One 16’ long spruce board that is 1/2’’ x1/4’’ in girth
- One 120’ long spruce board that is 3/4'’x6’’ in thickness
Additionally, you would also need 2’’ wood nails, outboard motor, 11/4’’x10’’ metal sheeting and 4’ long scrap board. As far as the tools are concerned, you would require hammer, saw, chisel, heavy drift and plane.
After you have collected the material and tools, you should start the boat-building process. First make the transom of the wooden boat. For it, use 16’ long spruce board of dimensions 1/2″x1/4″x4′. Cut the board to the length of 42-7/16’’. With the help of a saw, cut the board into an angle such that the top on either side is 8-inches shorter than the bottom. In the center of the top, curve out a groove that is 2’’ in depth and 14’’ in length.
In the next step, make the keel with 16’ long board with 2’’x4’’ thickness. The ends of the board have to be rounded off, so that the remaining 1’’ narrows down to a point at one end of the board. This tapering end should resemble a paddle that is 6’’ long. The remaining length of the board should be narrowed down to 15.5’x1/2’’ x4’’.
The stem is made for 2’ long spruce board. Before doing anything, place the board is such a manner that it becomes 4’’ in height. On the left side of the board, create groove that is 1/4'’ in length and 2’’ in depth. Similarly, on the right hand side, make a groove that is 4’’ in length and 2-3/16’’ in depth. On the reverse side of the board, mirror images of the grooves just created are made.
The sides of the wooden boat are made of two 4’’x1’’ boards that are 16’ in length. In the first plank, cut a notch that is 1/2'’in depth and 1 1/2'’ in width. Repeat the process for the other board too. The two boards will fit together perfectly; nail the two boards.
Now that you have created the components, you just have to assemble them together. Fix the sides of the wooden boat to the stem. Thereafter, attach the transom, and at the end, fix the bottom of the boat. Nail the keel to stem and transom of the boat. Turn the boat upside down and nail the keel on each bottom boards of the boat. Lastly, attach the outboard motor to the stem of the wooden boat. Sand the exterior and interior of the boat and give it a fresh coat of paint.
