How to Build Bunk Beds?
Bunk beds are the most practical pieces of furniture that efficiently fulfill the needs of a growing family. In addition to providing storage space, these beds easily accommodate two or more children. As your family grows, bunk beds become an indispensible part of your home. The good thing about bunk beds is that they can be built at home in a straightforward manner. In the following paragraphs, we shall uncover the simple procedure to build bunk beds.
- The first thing that you need to do is to collect all the requisite materials and tools for building the bunk beds. They include 2x4 and 2x6 plywood pieces, screws, nails, skill saw, drill, drill bits, hammer and measuring tape.
- Measure the size of the mattresses that you have at home. On the basis of this size, you would have to build the rectangular box of the bed. Generally, a box that is 3.5 feet wide and 6.5 feet long will simply accommodate all your mattresses.
- After you have taken the measurements, use the 2x6 plywood to construct the rectangular box. Instead of nails, use screws to joins the edges together. With screw, it becomes relatively easy to dismantle the bed.
- The next thing that you need to do is to attach support to the box. The support should be placed at three places; along the sides and in the middle of the topmost and bottom end of the bed. 2x4 plywood is ideal for this purpose. Once, you have attached the support; plug in all the screw holes so that your fingers and toes do not get caught in them.
- In the next step, the box has to be attached to the bed posts. There two methods to attach the box to the posts. In the first method, both the components are joined together with nails. With the help of drilling machine, a hole is made through the post and box, and carriage bolts are used to fasten them. In the second method, the post is notched and the box is slid into the post. Carriage bolts are again used in this case too. In either case, the lower bunk bed should be 12-inches above the floor and the upper bunk bed should be 48-inches above the floor. Remember, to plug in the bolt holes.
- For the interiors of the bunk beds, use thick and strong sheet of plywood because it would have to endure a lot of jumping. Railing should be constructed, especially if your kids are small. Before putting the bunk beds to use, scrutinize it thoroughly for any sharp ends and edges that can cause injury.
