How to Build Chaise Lounge?

Chaise lounge is not just a piece of furniture, but it is a work of art that allows you to stretch out and relax. Unlike other chairs, chaise lounge has a number of moving joints. This feature makes these lounges unique, but very difficult to build. However, the end-result of all the hard work is exceptionally good. So, let’s learn how to build a chaise lounge.

First collect all the pre-requisite materials and tools for the lounge. They include wood, nuts, screws, bolts, washers, carpentry glue, hammer, drill with complete drill set, circular or table saw, pencil, measuring tape, sandpaper and preservative finish. You can use any kind of wood for the chaise lounge. If the lounge would be kept in the open, exposed to the elements of nature, the teak wood would be the best choice; otherwise oak or pine would be equally good.

As chaise lounge has a number of pieces that have to be joined together. Hence, to make the project easier as well as to avoid any confusion, cut, sand, stain, seal and paint several wood pieces in the very beginning. However, before you start cutting the wood, it is essential to select the design. You can find different designs of chaise lounge in magazines, books, and also on the internet. You can also create your own design. Once, you have chosen the design, you have to think about the dimension of the lounge.

After the decision-making process is over, start building the chaise lounge. First of all, cut the base frame and back frame. For the former, two boards will be required that are 6-feet long, while for the latter, again two boards will be needed that are 4-feet long. 2x4 boards are ideal for both the frames.

For the seat and back support, you would need 1x2 stocks that are 2-feet and 6-inches long. Cut dowel which is of the same length as the stock pieces. Don’t forget to add 4-inches of the width of 2x4 boards. Repeat the process for four 1x3 pieces of wood. One thing that you should bear in mind is that the width pieces should always be placed within the length pieces.

With respect to the backrest support, cut two 1x3 stock and ensure that the pieces are as long as the hypotenuse of a 45o triangle, that starts from the base of the backrest. Take 1x2 boards and cut them into two pieces. The length of these two pieces is equal to the distance that is 4-inches below the attachment of the backrest to the end of the seat frame. On these boards router half circles. The intervals between the half-circles depend upon your reclining preferences. Last, but not the least, you have to cut wood stock for the arms and legs of the chaise lounge. 2x4 boards are appropriate for this purpose.

Sand, stain, seal and paint all the components of the lounge and allow them to dry for 48-hours. Thereafter, assemble the components together. Begin with the seat and the back frame. Then attach legs to the seat frame, and after that work on the seat and back slats. Finally, attach the arm rest; your chaise lounge is ready for use.
