How to Build Kitchen Cabinets?
Kitchen is an important space in your home where you spend the maximum amount of your time. It is a place where you cook food for your family and friends, and sometimes, even have your meals. Thus, your kitchen should have plenty of working space, and the best way to increase the space in your kitchen is to install cabinets. Kitchen cabinets are available in all kinds of shapes and sizes. However, such readymade cabinets can easily burn a hole in your pocket. If you don’t want to spend a large amount of money, then the best thing would be to build the kitchen cabinet at home. Here is a step-by-step procedure to build cabinets for your kitchen.
- The first thing that you need to do is to choose a design for your kitchen cabinets. Home improvement and lifestyle magazines can help you in this regard. You can also take the help of the internet or create the design on your own. All in all, the selected design should match with the décor of your kitchen and home.
- Now, take the measurement of the space where the cabinets have to be installed. These measurements have to be transferred on to the 3/4-inches 4’x8’ plywood. You would need four pieces; for the top, bottom and the two sides.
- Due to the width of the plywood, 3/4'’ has to be subtracted from the depth measurement and 1 1/2'’ should be reduced from the width measurement. Thus, the top and bottom piece would be 3/4'’ less than the actual measurement, and likewise, the side pieces will be 1 1/2'’ less than the true measurement.
- Join all the four pieces with the help of nails. To further strengthen the joints, apply glue, and after the glue dries, clamps should be installed. To prevent the plywood from splitting, drill should be used to make holes.
- For the face frame, you would need 3/4'’ hardboard plywood. Measure the height of the frame, and accordingly cut two pieces that are 2-inches wide. Fix these two slats on the left and right side of the frame with the help of screws. Measure the distance between the two newly fixed face frames. As per the measurement, again cut two pieces, which are 2’’ wide. Fix these two pieces on the upper and lower side of the frame.
- To make the doors, measure the height and width of the cabinet. You actually have to take the measurement of the space between the face frames. Divide the width measurement by 2 and add 1/2'’ for overhang. Use 3/4'’ hardboard plywood to make the doors. Fix the doors to the face frame by the means of hinges. Don’t forget to attach the door knob on the frame.
- Sand and paint the kitchen cabinets and install them in the selected space with the aid of studs. On the completion of this step, your kitchen cabinets would be ready for use.
