How to Build a Brick Fire Pit
Having a Fire pit in your yard is both fun and practical. You can use it to cook or warm yourself while enjoying a lovely but chilly night outside. Its versatility makes it popular and useful. Do you know that you can actually do it yourself instead of having someone else doing it for you? Let's how to build a brick fire pit - on your own.
Steps to Build a Brick Fire Pit
- Determine where you will place the pit. Avoid areas with trees or plantation very close by and remove any items made of flammable material.
- Dig a pit. It should be approximately one foot deep. Pits are usually in the shape of circle or oval -- not that it matters if you want to be original and build a square fire pit.
- Lay down the bricks leaving enough space for the woods or other materials you will use for the fire. Lay bricks at the bottom of the fire pit to create a secure and solid base. Wood or coil should not come in direct contact with the soil when burning. Some people tend to use metal frames and panels at the bottom of the fire pit, but it is not necessary. It is not very healthy when cooking either.
- Depending on the shape of the fire pit, have the outside part of the pit exceed the ground surface. Build the over the ground wall as tall as you like (although it is recommended not to exceed 30 inches).
- Starting with the bottom layer place the bricks close to each other, so they nearly touch (if you are making a round pit).
- Use cement or other binding material to join and secure the bricks and create a solid brick wall. Use a non flammable material.
- When you finish building, you can choose to decorate the over the surface brick wall. You can also use a grid or grate depending on the shape and the size of the fire pit.
- Buy your woods and start a fire to test the pit. If you see that everything is ok and the pit is stable, you are done.
