How to Build a Fish Tank

Learning how to build a fish tank on your own is easy and fun. It can also be quite cost effective! Check these directions and follow them step by step.

Instructions to Build a Fish Tank

The directions are for a fish tank of approximately thirty gallons of water.

  • Determine where you are going to place the tank.
  • Take a glass panel and place it on something soft and clean.
  • Use a duct tape to lay strips horizontally and vertically. Do it again so as to overlap the strips at about 3in.
  • Turn the glass panel upside down.
  • Use some acetone or similar product to clean the parts of the panel that will be joined with the rest -- use towels to dry them.
  • Take the new glass panel and lay it on top of the tape flat to the bottom surface.
  • Take a sealant and fill the empty space between the panels.
  • Raise the front panel to form a 90d angle and attach the two panels using a square. If you are afraid that it's not safe, tape it to the panel.
  • Use the sealant to fill the inside joint covering the entire length of the panels.
  • Repeat the same drill with a third panel, laying flat next to the bottom and using the sealant to fill the empty space. Repeat the same steps until you have both back and front size stable and secure. Use the same instructions for the side pieces and let them dry for 24 hours or so.
  • Use acetone again to clean any remains of the sealant.
  • Once you are done, place your tank on a smooth surface and cover the four bottom sides of the tank with sealant and put trim around it at the base. Let it dry for 10 hours.
  • Once it's dry, do the same thing to the tank edges and sides.
  • Once you do that fill the fish tank with water and let it stay for 12-15 hours. This is necessary to test it for leaks. If you notice leaking use the sealant to repair the problem.
  • Once it's done add water and follow the instructions to create the proper habitat for the new fish to come.
