How to Build a Gate

Have you ever thought about how you can build a gate? If you have a beautiful garden around your house, you can build a gate so that people do not barge to your garden as and when they feel like. A gate protects people from trespassing your garden or house. For those who are intrigued by making a gate for their garden or house by their own efforts, here are some tips.

  • Go to a home improvement store and get a ready-made garden gate. A prefabricated garden gate is akin to building it from the scratch, which can be time-consuming. You can customize the side of the gate by adding frames or posts.

Building The Gate

  • Fix the gate between two gate posts. To make the gate posts, drive the post spikes that you get from a home improvement store, into the soil with the help of a sledgehammer. Compared to the method of digging holes and pouring concrete to balance the posts, the post spikes are a quicker and easier alternative. Keep a 2 by 4 wood underneath so that the bottom part of the gate can move easily, when you open and shut the gate. Check and see if the gate is level on both sides, horizontally and vertically.
  • Make use of the hinges. If you plan to make the gate open to the inside, you have to affix the hinges to the horizontal membranes inside the gate. If you want the gate to open to the outside, fix the hinges to the exterior part of the gate, keeping them aligned with the boards.
  • While attaching the gate latch, make sure you keep it near the top portion of the gate, so that it is out of reach of small children.
  • You will now have to add a gate stop. This is a piece of wood that is to be attached to the post. The gate post is used for stopping the gate from swinging too far out, thereby preventing the gate and the post from being damaged. The gate stop should be about one inch thick and of equal length as the gate.
  • Find out if the gate that you've built is strong and has a smooth motion. In case it is wobbly to some extent, add some concrete in the ground for extra support.
