How to Build a Model Sailboat

Building a model sailboat is a very creative and rewarding experience. Though the work may run into hours, the final outcome is worth it because it will last for years on end. The tools that you require are aircraft plywood, epoxy glue, graph paper, and pins, modeling knife, scissors, tape measure, clamps and pencil. Understand that building a model sailboat will require hours of patience. You will have to pay attention to small parts that go into making the whole thing. You should sit with a wood smith who is good at cutting wood in shape to get the right and perfect shaped sailboat.

Here is how you can build a model sailboat

  1. Shape the wood to create the hull of the sailboat. You can do so with the help of a box cutter, as you deftly remove wood shavings to form a tapering on one end of the wood. Aim to create an angular shape, as you shave wood along the side to make the bottom of the sail boat.
  2. With the help of the sandpaper, sand all sides of the wood. Define the shape of the boat in a better manner with the sandpaper and make the point of the hull as well as the edges of the boat smooth.
  3. Use a drilling machine and make a hole for putting the sail support mast. The hole should be made in the bow of the sail boat hull and the impression should be at a depth of half an inch or more.
  4. Take a hand saw and cut the dowel to six inches. Make sure that the cut is even and straight.
  5. Sand the dowel as well. Ensure that there are no rough edges or splinters that could hurt your hand.
  6. Now install the mast. Put a good amount of glue in the hull's hole. Place in the dowel mast. If some glue seeps out of the hole, wipe it off. Give time for the glue to set. The duration can be anywhere between half an hour and twenty four hours. Use the waiting period to make the sail.
  7. Cut the canvas or some similar material to make a four inch equilateral triangle.
  8. Paste the sail to the mast along one side. Apply glue to the dowel mast. Wrap or enfold the canvas around the mast in such a manner that you are not able to see the edge portion of the cloth.
  9. Create the rigging for your boat. Stick the string to the side of the sail that is pasted to the mast. Make use of a stapler machine and fix the other end of the string to the hull.
