How to Build a Pond

A pond can not only be considered as an attractive feature of your backyard but also a habitat for wildlife and nature. The picturesque locale of a pond adds to the serenity of your home and when birds, aquatic animals and insect cohabit in a pond, it looks even more beautiful. Developing a pond may seem very complicated although it is not. You may require certain equipments to build a beautiful pond near your house. Having proper equipment to build the pond is very important. First of all you need to determine the size, shape and style of the pond you wish to build. Put your imagination and creativity to work so that you may get a proper picture of the pond you wish to set in your back yard.


Stuff You Need

  • You should try to visualize your pond from different possible angles. You may also create a blue print of your pond. Considering the size of your backyard or garden you should decide the size of your pond. Also remember that a bigger pond requires larger marine animals where as a smaller pond would need a smaller fish.
  • To build up a pond you may require materials such as a liner, electrical cords, artificial plants or real plants, stakes, stones, ware stabilizer etc. To accomplish the tasks, you may also require some tools such as a shovel, measure tape, string hose and water source. Now as you are equipped with required tools you may start the task of building the pond.
  • You need to dig a pond using the shovel, according the size determined earlier. It is suggested to design a slope on one side of the pond. This will allow fish to get some sun while they are around the steep side of the pond. Also animals which accidentally have fallen in the pond can get back on land through this side of the pond. Once the digging part for developing the pond is accomplished, you now need to lay the foundation of the pond.

Building The Pond

  • To prepare the foundation of the pond you may use concrete or sand flooring. If you decide to use cement for your pond, make sure that you use wire or other item to bind it together and avoid the foundation from cracking.
  • Now it is the time to set the liner into the pond. Make sure that you have the right quality liner for your pond. While you lay the liner on the foundation you need be careful and attentive so that you do not cause any puncture in the liner.
  • Once the liner is positioned on the base properly, you need to add water to the pond. Slowly fill the water in the pond and then secure the sides by placing stones or other heavy and preferably decorative materials on the sides. If there is any extra portion of the liner on the sides of the pond, you may either cover it with sand or other attractive articles like stones, plants etc or you may also cut the extra portion.
