How to Build a Raft
A raft is a small floating platform you can use in rivers, lakes or even at the sea; it can be a great substitute for fishermen who cannot afford a boat or who do not have access to any. It can also be used by kids and families for entertainment reasons, or for anything that requires a small platform floating on water. Let's see how you can build a raft step by step:
What will you need:
- A hatchet to cut the wooden panels
- Spruce or logs
- Leaves and ropes (ropes are not necessary unless you want to create raft like Robinson Crusoe
- A twine
- Water jugs
- Wooden panels
Instructions to Build a Raft
- The first thing you need to do is to take all woods and wooden panels and lay them on the ground next to each other. Make sure that you have at least twelve of them. The woods should be 12 foot long and 12inches thick. Wooden panels will be used as a 'deck' therefore you do not need to have 12 inches thick panels. Just make sure that they fit the length.
Use the hatchet and cut groves at the end of logs. Make sure that they have the shape of a U. Grooves should be cut almost 2inc from the logs' end. - Take two logs and place them in the groves you cut earlier; make sure that the logs you will use are almost 7''x 7'.
- Take the Twine and wrap it in a criss-cross way ensuring that the logs are firmly attached to each other and that the raft is stable. Use the ropes to create a safer raft if needed. This step is decisive not only because it will ensure the safety of the raft, but also because your raft should be able to float now.
Test the raft flipping it over; the smaller logs should be on the bottom. - Take the water jugs and place them on the bottom of the raft securing them with the twine.
- Take the leaves and place them on the top of the raft, creating small layers as cushion. If you think that your raft will be slippery this way, cut some wooden panels and attach them on the top, creating a small deck. This should keep you safe enough.
