How to Build a Trailer
Trailers are very useful vehicles as they are practical and quite versatile. You can use them to carry some things or just for storage. Building a trailer on your own is not as hard as you think if you know a few helpful hints. Here are some tips on how to build a trailer.
Steps to Build a Trailer
- Gather your supplies. Are you going to use metal or wood frames? Plywood panels are the best for this case.
- Design the trailer you will make. A roofless trailer is easier to make and much more useful. The design will help you determine how much material you need.
- The wheel and axle set is the most important part of the trailer. If you don't feel like risking the entire construction you can buy an axle set from a store, rather than building this part yourself.
- Buy your materials ( wood panels, screws, L brackets, rods etc)
- Measure the wood panels to make sure that they fit together. Determine the length and width of the trailer you want to make.
- Bolt the wood frames on the metal part of the base you will use.
- Use metal rods so as to make sure that they fit on the base and that they install easily.
- Adding the sides can be tricky and needs extra attention. Take a screwdriver and adjust the side frames to the base -- you must have L brackets.
- Connect the one part on the side frame and other to the base, so as to keep the side walls stable and secure.
- Since you are not making a trailer with a top, the side frames can be as tall as 7 inches.
- Connect all the frames and walls together; you will use again the L brackets for that, securing the boards to each other.
- If you feel that everything is tight, try to put a little pressure on the trailer, to test if it is at I looks. Once you put everything together move the trailer a little and check all screws and brackets. Keep in mind that you might need to tighten them again after some time.
