How to Build a Wall

A wall defines a home or an office. In fact, the wall is so much synonymous to construction that people recognize a building by its wall. There are walls of different kinds: stone walls, plaster walls, concrete walls etc. Let us understand how to construct a wall:

Tools Needed

  • The materials or tools needed for building a wall are simple 2 inch thick lumber, nails, plaster, sand paper, wall board tape, wall board, hammer, measuring tape, pencil, scrapper and a few other miscellaneous items.

Building The Wall

  • To build a good foundation on which the wall could be erected, dig till you come across a flat, level base.
  • Make use of a 2″x10′ lumber piece. This is the wood that will be nailed to the floor. Now take another piece of lumber; this is the vertical part of the wall or stud. Drive a nail from the stud to the footer lumber by doing so at a 45 degree angle. Do the same thing at the other end of the stud with the piece of wood or the header that will be attached at the top of the wall. Now you have built the frame of the wall.
  • You will need to hoist the frame onto the footer and drive the nail to the floor. Do the similar thing for other walls too. You can also do plumbing and electrical work at this stage.
  • Pay attention of the kind of the skin you want to decorate the wall with. Start with the corner of the wall skin and nail it to the stud with screws. Do not hammer aggressively because it can leave a mark on the board paper covering. In case, you need to trim a short piece of the skin, use a sharp knife and then break with your hand.
  • Make use of a tape for the joints and use a very thin plaster coating over them. Once you are able to sand the joins flush, you will be able to cover the entire wall with plaster.
  • Building a brick wall is an age old activity dating to 3000 BC. For building a brick wall, you need bricks and mortar. It is better to build a brick wall, because the material does not burn or decay. The wide side of the brick is called a stretcher and the end side is called a header. While you are laying bricks for building a wall, work from left to right.Take your left hand, lift a brick from a stack and scoop some mortar or mud from a mortar board with trowel that you hold in your right hand. Set the brick into a definite direction now and once you are done, remove extra mortal from the wall that comes out from the brick.
