How to Build a Wooden Boat

A wooden boat is a small, cute boat that you can paddle down rivers and small creeks. All you need are a few tools to build a wooden boat after which you can set sail merrily across the waters. Here is how you can build a wooden boat easily:

Decide What Boat You Want

  • You can build a wooden boat through lapstrake construction. It implies construction of a wooden canoe in such a manner that every longitudinal board overlaps the one below similar to a clapboard house. The glue lapstrake boat can be as long as you want, as small as 3 feet long or as long as 10 feet. In the lapstrake construction, the planks which form the hull will be glued, lapped atop each other.

Building The Boat

  • For the bottom board, take two pieces of hardwood, cut and join with Marine Epoxy hard glue at an angle to create the shape of the boat. Once you have done this, sand it well with an orbit sander.
  • On the wood that you have chosen as material for the boat, mark the 'ribs' and cut them with a jigsaw. Form a jig-screw with two pieces of wood and sand it well.
  • Once you attach the ribs, work on the planking. Drill, glue and tighten the screws of the boards to the ribs. Now put the planking in place, stick the lapstrakes together with tough glue like Marine Epoxy, over the jig. Cut the top rails so that they can be installed atop the lapstrakes. You need to caulk or fill the cracks in adjacent surface with a marine caulk so that the water does not seep in when you use the boat.
  • Sand the exterior and interior of the boat. Check if the interior and exterior part is sealed well, before installing the fiber glass. If you do not want the fiber glass and prefer pure wood, stretch and bend the lumber for the hill. This can take a long time; after the wood is fixed to the hull, put some resin and paint it to make it waterproof.
  • Afterwards, you need to sand the boat's exterior. Once the sanding of the boat's exterior is done, do the same procedure on the interior.
  • Fit the top rails and decorate the interiors the way you want. You can opt to pain or varnish the outside part of the boat. Go for a reputed varnish that specializes in Wood varnishing.
