How to Build an Awning

Awnings are very useful when it comes to sunny places; they can provide shade from very bright sun and a nice shelter in the case it is rainy or windy. Awnings are usually made of canvas, although there are some that are plastic and of course waterproof. Plastic awnings are not very durable when it comes to sun and might wear out quite fast in comparison with canvas which is a very durable and resistant material. Building an awning is relatively easy and can be quite cost effective solution if you do not want to pay someone to do it for you.

Steps to Build an Awning

  1. Measure the place where you are going to place the awning in order to buy the piece of canvas you need. Make sure that the piece you buy is slightly bigger than the area you measured.
  2. Take the piece of cloth you bought and hem its edges. It is better to do it by hand or use a sewing machine in order to ensure that the cloth will be well made. Use a straight stitch and install a small grommet in every corner of the cloth.
  3. Take a drill and drill to holes where you are going to place the corners of the awning; once open take a screw hook and attach it in the hole firmly.

Then take the key rings and place them through each one of the grommets on the side that will be attached to the house or any other surface you choose. Place a key ring on the right hook and one on the left. Now you have the one side of the awning done.
  4. Make sure that the cloth -- canvas is stretched and determine where you will place each pole. You can either drive them to the ground or have their flat ends sitting on the pavement. Attach the cloth using the grommets in every pole.
  5. Next you need to tether the cloth using a rope. You should tie two parts of the rope on each grommet, where you placed the poles earlier. Pull the one part to the front and attach them to the ground and do the same using the other two sections.

Once you do that you are done and your awning will be there to offer you shade all year long. Since it is easy to remove, you can put it inside during winter.
