How to Build an Igloo
When it comes to Igloos we all have a certain image in our minds; a dome shaped construction full of ice. Although the shape can differ, ice and snow are necessary to create an igloo. Let's see how you can build an igloo in a few easy steps.
Steps to Build an Igloo
- Make some block molds, which are even.
- Nail some boards together to create a rectangular box open from both sides. Make two of different sizes.
- Clear a space of snow and make it flat. Mark a circle space and try to make it round
- Make snow blocks and use the bigger mold to pack snow in.
- Water the snow so as to pack it easier -- and make it sturdier
- Hold the mold in the air and tap the sides to release the block.
- Take the snow blocks and start bricking them creating a circle
- Create a row, using the bigger blocks first. Make their joints even and place fresh snow if needed to create a mortar.
- Take rest of blocks and create a second layer. Lay each block above the joint and stagger the blocks.
- Then you need to stack more layers on the top moving the bricks in such a way to start creating a small dome.
- Make sure that the blocks you use first are thicker than the other ones, decreasing thickness gradually as you move towards the top. Keep the dome as a shape in mind and try to create it. You can determine how tall you want your igloo to be; you can be placing blocks accordingly.
- Once you have created the basis of the igloo, you can determine whether you want to create rooms in the igloo or not. If you want, it's better to have someone in the igloo working on that; you can stay outside creating the dome.
- Take a brick and cut it so as to create the top of the igloo.
- Place it on the top and trim it as much as needed in order to fit the hole.
- If you have any cracks or openings, use fresh snow to cover them.
- Create your entrance to the igloo -- this is easy because the only thing you need to do it to dig down. The hole of the entrance should ramp into the igloo you created, allowing the air to fall out, keeping the warmer air inside.
Enjoy it!
